Getting started

Build your first outfit

The quickest way to understand MogForge is to complete one small outfit from an anchor item. You do not need an addon or account, and you do not need to choose every filter before you begin.

1. Set the character before choosing armor

Open the Transmog panel and choose the race, gender, and class you want to dress. This choice affects more than the character model. In the normal rules mode, MogForge uses the selected class to hide armor types and weapons that character cannot use. A Priest therefore begins with Cloth-compatible choices, while a Warrior begins with Plate-compatible choices.

You can also change face, skin color, hairstyle, hair color, and any race-specific options that the viewer currently supports. Small color previews appear beside relevant customization fields. These settings are stored locally in the browser, so they remain available on the next visit without being attached to a MogForge account.

If you are planning for the announced 12.2.5 armor-rule change, leave the normal rules active for your first outfit. The optional cross-armor switch is explained in its own guide and is deliberately off by default.

2. Pick one anchor item

An anchor is the piece that defines the direction of the outfit. It might be a helmet with a distinctive silhouette, a weapon with a strong glow, or a chest piece whose palette you want to repeat. Search its name in the catalogue or in the Find an item by name field inside the Transmog panel.

Open the item rather than relying only on the thumbnail. The item view shows the known source records, colors, other items that share the appearance, and a larger 3D preview. If the appearance is correct, choose Add to transmog. Items are stored by appearance rather than by a single item name, which is why more than one source item may be shown.

3. Narrow one dimension at a time

Return to the catalogue and choose the next equipment slot: shoulders, chest, hands, feet, main hand, or another part of the look. Avoid activating every control at once. A reliable sequence is slot first, then item kind or weapon category, then source, and finally color. This makes it clear which choice removed an otherwise useful result.

The source section can target an expansion, activity, location, named source, or difficulty. If you do not need an exact source, use the source-type switches to hide categories such as PvP while leaving raids, quests, vendors, and other indexed sources visible. Exact source filters and the broader switch list are mutually exclusive to keep the query understandable.

4. Add color deliberately

MogForge can search for up to four main colors and two accent colors. Start with one main color sampled from the anchor item. Broad is useful while exploring because it allows related shades and more variation. Precise is better after you know the palette and want pieces that carry several of its colors. Accent matching is intended for small trims, gems, glows, and highlights—not for a color that should cover half the model.

If the results disappear, clear the least important color or reduce the minimum coverage before widening every shade range. Color is measured from rendered images, so lighting and effects can influence what the search sees. The dedicated color guide explains these controls in detail.

5. Use recommendations after two or three pieces

The recommendation panel becomes more useful once the outfit has a small but coherent palette. It compares compatible appearances with the colors of the equipped items and fills empty equipment slots. Select up to three favored slots if a helmet, chest, or weapon should influence the result more strongly than the rest of the outfit.

Include same set places verified compatible pieces from the same in-game set family first. Turning it off excludes those set-family matches, which is useful when you want a more original combination. Recommendations are suggestions rather than a promise that every source record or recolor is perfect, so inspect the item before adding it.

6. Check the outfit and export

Rotate the character and inspect the outfit from the back and sides. Look for clipping, oversized shoulders, hidden chest details, weapon placement, and colors that only matched from one camera angle. The browser model is a close planning preview, but the in-game Dressing Room remains the final check.

Choose Export & share when the outfit is ready. MogForge can create the native /customset command, an unlisted permanent link that another player can remix, and a square image. Copying the command into WoW opens the Dressing Room; it does not apply the transmog or spend gold automatically.

A compact first-outfit checklist

  1. Choose the character and class.
  2. Add one visually strong anchor item.
  3. Filter for one empty slot at a time.
  4. Use one main color in Broad mode, then refine.
  5. Check recommendations after two or three pieces.
  6. Preview from several angles and verify the result in game.
