Character setup and the 3D preview

A transmog is more than a row of item thumbnails. Proportions, attachment points, hair, skin tone, and character silhouette all affect the result, so MogForge lets you inspect individual appearances and a complete outfit on a configurable character.

Set up the character first

Open the Transmog panel and choose the race, gender, and class you intend to use. Class affects which armor and weapons are considered compatible; race and gender affect the model, proportions, and available customization controls. The visible customization fields update for the selected character and can include face, skin color, hair style, hair color, horns, ears, tattoos, or other race-specific choices.

Your recent character choices are kept in the browser so that normal catalogue browsing does not require an account. Randomize is useful for testing an outfit against several looks, but a deliberate setup is better when hair volume, skin color, or facial features form part of the composition.

Two preview levels

Inspect one appearance

Use an item card's 3D action to open the detailed appearance view. This is the quickest way to check geometry that is difficult to read from a catalogue image: the depth of a shoulder, the length of a weapon, the back of a cloak, or the shape of a helm around ears and horns.

Inspect the whole outfit

Add appearances to the Transmog panel to build a combined model. Drag to rotate and use the available zoom controls to examine the silhouette from several angles. View mode reduces surrounding interface when you want the model to be the focus. On a phone, the layout is arranged as a vertical workflow so character controls, search, viewer, equipment, and recommendations remain usable without squeezing the desktop columns into a narrow screen.

What to look for

  1. Check the front at normal viewing distance. The outfit should have one clear focal area rather than equal visual weight everywhere.
  2. Rotate to the side and back. Oversized shoulders, shields, cloaks, and long weapons can change the silhouette dramatically.
  3. Inspect boundaries between chest, waist, hands, and legs for abrupt material or color transitions.
  4. Compare the head slot with the selected hair, ears, horns, and face. Hide the helm when the character itself provides a stronger top silhouette.
  5. Zoom out again before deciding. A detail that looks perfect close-up may disappear at normal gameplay scale.

Why the browser can differ from the game

The viewer reconstructs game models in a browser from available model and appearance data. It is a close planning preview, not the World of Warcraft rendering engine. Lighting, animation, material effects, particles, transparency, attachment position, and some race-specific geometry can differ. Newly released or unusual models may take time to become fully supported.

Layering can also expose differences. Robe geometry may hide legs differently, gloves can replace part of a sleeve, and a belt model can sit differently across races. Some effects are animated in the game but appear simplified or static in a web preview. These limitations do not necessarily mean the item or export identifier is wrong.

Use the in-game Dressing Room as the final authority. Before spending gold, currency, or farming time, export the outfit and inspect it in the current game client.

When a preview fails to load

First try another known item on the same character. If every model fails, reload the page once and check whether privacy tools or strict browser extensions are blocking required assets. If only one appearance fails, open its details and report the specific appearance. A screenshot, item name, selected race and gender, and the appearance identifier make the problem much easier to reproduce.

A blank slot is not always a rendering fault. Some catalogue records are intentionally not equipped because they are incompatible with the selected slot or character rules. Check the slot label and item details before assuming the viewer has lost the model.

Preview for composition, verify for accuracy

The best use of the model viewer is comparative: decide whether option A or option B gives the better shape, whether an accent repeats enough, and whether the outfit remains coherent from behind. Use the native Dressing Room for exact current-client rendering. Together they provide a faster loop than repeatedly finding every candidate inside the game.
